Client: Crosby lend Lease

Completed: 2005

Architect: Glenn Howells

Landscape Projects worked with Glenn Howells Architects and Weedons for Crosby Homes at Southside, Birmingham on a development of apartments in central Birmingham.

The development contribute to the recent renaissance of Birmingham as a place for living. The project placed a considerable emphasis on the open courtyard spaces within the apartments to provide a tranquil setting for the occupants. Special care has been taken to develop a clear hierarchy from public to private space, using passive surveillance techniques for a safer environment. At the same time the scheme density and layout builds a level of occupancy which closely follows the existing street pattern, making clear connections to the city and a lively and attractive environment.

The courtyards layouts reflect the scheme requirements for passive ventilation from the car park below. As a result the planted areas are carefully positioned to maximise impact and provide privacy, making attractive social spaces within the courtyards.

Water features and ramps are positioned to maximise visual impact, and planting provides year-round interest.
