Project name: Buckland Court
Client: Shoreditch Trust, Hackney Council
Architect: Henley Halebrown Rorrison
Shoreditch Trust New Deal for Communities with Hackney Council commissioned Architects Buschow Henley to improve the security and landscape setting of this 1960s housing block.
Buckland Court is arranged as three linked residential blocks that form three edges to a central courtyard, with low roofed garages enclosing the forth edge. The courtyard is generous but lacks structure and security.
Landscape Projects together with Buschow Henley developed a design around themes such as exercise and horticulture. Small orchard type tree planting, grassy glades and the use of herb planting provide a community garden at a human scale with a sense of use. Residents look down upon a courtyard that presents to them not only a garden space for leisure and play but also a cultivated space where they may participate in the growing and care of the plants.
